Eswatini Visit fair trader
Hilary, Shelagh, Bosie, Emma, Vusie and John flying the flag for Swaziland and Eswatini in fait trader
It’s not everyday we get visitors from Swaziland, so it was brilliant to welcome Vusie Nkambule from Eswatini Kitchen who works with the smallholder women farmers who supply the organic fruit and vegetables for their delicious jams, marmalades, and pickles, and his colleague Busie Maponga who is a key link between the factory and the farmers. We have sold these delicious and distinctive products since opening five years ago and they have built up a strong following amongst our customers.
Volunteers Hilary, Shelagh and Mark, along with staff member Emma, heard how the income from their sales makes such a difference to the farmers-a few examples can be found at http://jts.co.uk/blog/178-eswatini-swazi-kitchen-farmers-stories
The visitors were accompanied by John and Wade from Just Trading Scotland who import and distribute their products in the UK and work with fair trader and other small retailers to try and increase the volumes they can export. We admired the new packaging and branding for their range and discussed ways of helping them further at a time when many of the large retailers seem only interested in price cutting funded by lowering prices paid to producers at a time when they can afford it least.
Having heard at first hand the inspirational stories about how this enterprise is helping hardworking women who live on very little, our volunteers will now be trying even harder to persuade visitors to the shop and fellow co-operators to give these superb products a try.
